A gorgeous, captivating film…

With an outstanding script expertly brought to life through stellar performances and striking cinematography, Shelter is a gorgeous, captivating film that is, at its heart, a story about family. — Kirsten Schaffer, Outfest

Forced to give up his dreams of art school in order to take care of his family, Zach has become accustomed to a life where he neglects his own needs in favor of taking care of his older sister, Jeanne and his nephew, Cody. When his best friend’s older brother, Shaun, returns home to cure a case of writer’s block, Shaun and Zach develop a friendship that develops into a true, intimate relationship. Shaun presses Zach to take control of his life, and to take ownership of his artwork. He also develops a strong bond with Cody, and Zach happily notices the positive effect Shaun’s attention has on him. As time progresses, however, a host of new issues come up. Zach struggles with his identity, his family, and friends, while trying to understand the new emotions Shaun has brought into his life. When the cat is let out of the bag, Jeanne threatens to take Cody away. Wanting nothing but the best for him, Zach is forced to decide between his pattern of always putting others’ desires first or fighting for what is really most important and appropriate for both his and Cody’s future.

Shelter

The feature-film debut from art director Jonah Markowitz pivots on the tension between responsibility to family and responsibility to self. Recent high-school graduate Zach has one summer to reconcile the competing halves of his life. The aspiring Picasso lives in blue-collar San Pedro with his irresponsible sister, Jeanne, her five-year-old son, Cody, and their rarely-seen father. Zach gave up his art school dreams to toil in a diner and help look after his much-loved nephew. With his best friend, Gabe, away at college, Zach draws, surfs, and skateboards by his lonesome. When Gabe's novelist brother, Shaun, returns to his Orange County home to recover from a broken heart, he and Zach alternate between riding the waves and encouraging each other to pursue their aspirations. Shaun is gay, while Zach appears to be straight, but a casual kiss between the two soon leads to a secret relationship. Before the former returns to Los Angeles, the latter has to decide who he is — gay, straight, artist, cook, uncle, or father — and what he's going to do about it.

Shelter: a novel by Caleb McCarthy

Shelter centers on a young man, Zach, in San Pedro, California, who gives up on his dream of art school in order to provide for his family, consisting of his aging father and his young nephew Cody, whose mother Jeanne has decided her priorities lie elsewhere. When his best friend's brother Shaun returns to town, Zach finds in him a friend and confidant. As Zach becomes increasingly attracted to Shaun, their casual surfing relationship turns into much more, setting off a chain of events that forces Zach to choose between continuing to put others first or fighting for what he wants for himself.
